Question

Carefully read the following statements about cell division (1) After meiosis, the number of chromosomes in the newly formed cell is the same as that in the parent cell. Whereas, in mitosis, the chromosome number in daughter cell is reduced to half. (2) Cytokinesis is a highly regulated event in which cellular organelles are evenly distributed forming two daughter cells. (3) In Meiosis, DNA replication occurs only once whereas the cells divide twice and it is the mechanism that produces genetic variation in daughter cells. (4) In diplotene, chiasmata are formed between homologous chromosomes followed by crossing over and segregation of sister chromatids. (5)The kinetochore is a DNA protein complex which serves as the attachment point for spindle fibers. Which of the above statement or combination of statements is correct?

Explanation / Answer

Meiosis is the process of cell division where, the number of chromosome is reduced to half and, creating four daughter cells. These daughter cells are genetically different from their parent cells. Meiosis generally takes place for production of gametes and, plant spores.

The DNA replication occurs during interphase, irrespective of meiosis or mitosis. Each cell division, either meiosis or mitosis has only one interphase. After interphase comes prophase I , in meiosis, where chromosomes are lined up side by side. A piece of chromosome from parent homologous pair of chromosome then crosses over leading to new DNA combinations.

Mitosis is the cell division process that results in formation of 2 daughter cells. Each of these cells have the same number and kind of chromosome as the parent. Mitosis helps in ordinary tissue growth.

Cytokinesis is the stage of cell division where the cytoplasm of a single parent cell divide into 2 daughter cells.

Diplotene is the last stage of prophase I of meiosis. During this stage the paired homologus chromosome begin to repel each other. But these chromosomes are held together by chiasmata, which is the point of exchange of genetic material between non sister chromatids of homologus chromosome occurs.

Kinetochore is a protein structure that forms during cell divison on a chromatid. Kinetochore allows the chromatid to attach on a spindle fiber of a chromosome. It is due to kinetochore that helps in pulling chromatids apart making sure that each new cell has one chromatid from each pair.

So, with this information it can be deduced that the statement 2, 3, 4 and, 5 are true.
