Question

Choose one particular ecosystem of interest to you. Investigate and describe the organisms, both plants and animals that live there. Has this ecosystem been altered by human activity over the past 100 years? Are there any plants or animals that have been exploited for human use? How has this affected the ecosystem? Write a brief (300-500 words) reflection on what you find, beginning with a description of the ecosystem and then responding to the questions presented. This is in Environmental Survey.

Explanation / Answer

Terrestrial ecosystem

This ecosystem supports lives of many plants and animals and we are very familiar with it as this is the ecosystem which supports mankind. The terrestrial ecosystem includes all sorts of plants be it higher plants, shrubs herbs climbers and so on. To name a few we have Catharanthus roseus, Digitalis purpurea, Rauvolfia serpentina which are medicinally active in nature.  Plants of Solanacea family which includes all the edible plants like potato tomato beans spinach etc. Ornamental plants like money plant, palm trees, roses, lily, sunflower and so on. Also the ecosystem comprises of various other microorganisms which forms the scavenging bacteria, auto trophic bacteria and so on. Next animals include tiger, lion jackal, wolf bear and so on. This ecosystem has been under destruction since a long time. It has been continuously restricted to build roads, malls, buildings factories etc. Many plants and animals have been exploited for human use. Like foxes are used to contribute in manufacturing of furs, leather industry harms animals for its manufacturing, plants of medicinally value are now threatened as a result of their over collection. A lot of such activities have hampered the smooth functioning of terrestrial ecosystem. The environmental conditions are altered due to the interference of human population
