Question

Consider the following. (Let C1 = 29.80 ?F and C2 = 23.80 ?F.)

(a) Find the equivalent capacitance of the capacitors in the figure. ____?F

(b) Find the charge on each capacitor.

on the right 29.80 ?F capacitor ____?C

on the left 29.80 ?F capacitor ____?C

on the 23.80 ?F capacitor ___?C

on the 6.00 ?F capacitor ____?C

(c) Find the potential difference across each capacitor.

on the right 29.80 ?F capacitor ____V

on the left 29.80 ?F capacitor ____V

on the 23.80 ?F capacitor ____V

on the 6.00 ?F capacitor ____V

Explanation / Answer

C2 and 6uF are in parallel connection , equivalent of these two capacitors is C' then

C' = C2 + 6 = 23.80 + 6 = 29.80 uF

now C1, C' and C1 are in series connection,

1/C = 1/C1 + 1/C' + 1/C1

1/C = 2/29.80 + 1/29.80

C = 9.93 uF ......Ans

b) charge on both C1 = C V = 9.93x 9 = 89.4 uC

charge on 6 uF = 89.4 x 6 / (6 + 23.80) = 18 uC

charge on C2 = 89.4 x 23.80 / (6 + 23.80) = 71.4 uC

c) across both 29.80C, Q /C = 89.4 / 29.80 = 3 volt

cross 6uF and 23.80 uF = 9 -2(3) = 3 uF
