The figure at the right shows the same four resistors from last week's pre-lab circuit shown above, but connected in a parallel circuit with the same battery as in that circuit. Take the current from the battery Ip, as 400 mA. What is potential difference across each resistor? How do you know? What is the current through each of the resistors? How do you know? If we added a fifth resistor in a fifth branch how would that affect the potential difference across each of the resistors, the current through each of the resistors and the current I_p?Explanation / Answer
2) Total voltage = V = 4 + 8 + 9 +3 = 24 V
Ip = 400 mA
Resistance of circuit = V/Ip = 24/400*10^-3 = 60 ohm
As all resistors are of equal value and are in parallel then value of each resistor = R = 60*4 = 240 ohm
Now when all resistors are connected in parallel, then the potential drop across each resistor will be same = 24 V
The current through reah resistor will be same = I = V/R = 24/240 = 100 mA
