Question

Suppose in the figure that the four identical currents i = 13 A, into or out of the page as shown, form a square of side 64 cm. What is the force per unit length (magnitude and direction) on the wire in the bottom left hand corner? (N/m) Take the positive y direction as up and the positive x direction as to the right.

a) What is the magnitude of the force per unit length? Answer is 8.35×10-5 N/m

b) What is the x component of the force per unit length?

c) What is the y component of the force per unit length?

I need help with b and c please!!!

I keep getting 26.39*10^-6 N/m for b and 79.17*10^-6 N/m for c but both are wrong.

Explanation / Answer

whe n current are in same direction then force is attaractive and otherwise repulsive.

and magnitude of force per unit length,

F / L = u0 I1 I2 / 2 pi d

Total force on bottom left wire = due to bottom right side wire + top left wire + top right wire

Fnet = [(4pi x10^-7 x 13 x 13 ) / (2 x pi x 0.64)] (-i) + [(4pi x10^-7 x 13 x 13 ) / (2 x pi x 0.64)] (j)

+ [(4pi x10^-7 x 13 x 13 ) / (2 x pi x sqrt(0.64^2 + 0.64^2))] (-cos45i -sin45j)

Fnet= - 5.28 x 10^-5 i + 5.28 x 10^-5 j - 2.64 x 10^-5 i - 2.64 x 10^-5 j

Fnet = - 7.92 x 10^-5i   + 2.64 x 10^-5 J

a) Magnitude of force = sqrt(7.92^2 + 2.64^2 ) x 10^-5 = 8,.35 x 10^-5 N/m

b) Fx = - 7.92 x 10^-5 N/m

c) Fy = 2.64 x 10^-5 N/m
