Question
Please explain your answer, confused here because of wording. confused on concept based on a hypertonic cell vs. a hypertonic solution
- 46 If cells are placed in a hypertonic solution, A. water flows into the cell because of the cell's higher solute concentration B. water flows into the cell because of the cell's lower solute concentration C. water flows out the cell because of the cell's higher solute concentration D. water flows out the cell because of the cell's lower solute concentration E. there is no net loss or gain of waterExplanation / Answer
D. Water flows out of the cell because of the cell's lower solute concentration.
The hypertonic solution has a higher solute concentration with respect to the cell. It means that the solution has lower water concentration and the cell has higher water concentration. When the cell is placed in hypertonic solution water will move out of the cell from higher concentration (or higher water potential) to lower concentration (or lower water potential). In other words water will move out of the cell because of the cells lower solute concentration.
(Note: A hypertonic cell will have more solute concentration with respect to a solution in which it is placed.)
