Question

For the circuit shown to the right, determine the magnitude of the currents I_2, I_3, and I_4 passing through batteries 2. 3, and 4, respectively. In each case, determine whether the battery is supplying power or being charged. The batteries and resistors in the circuit are assumed to be ideal and have the following properties: epsilon_1 33.0 V epsilon_2 = 1.50 V epsilon_3 18.0 V epsilon_4 6.00 V R_1 = 37.0 ohm R_2 = 10.0 ohm R_3 = 25.0 ohm I_2 supplaying Power Being Charged I_3 supplaying Power Being Charged I_4 supplaying Power Being Charged

Explanation / Answer

taking the loop equation for the right we get

- 1.50 + i2 (10) + 33 + i2 (37) - 6 = 0

solving we get the current i2 = 0.54 A

- 18 + i3 (25) + 6 = 0

e1 is supplying charge where as e2 and e3 arte being charged

i3 = 0.48 A

i3 + i4 = i2

so we get

i4 = i2 - i3

= 0.54 - 0.48

= 0.06 A
