Question

Can someone please show all steps on how to get the final answer please?!

A 5.0g bullet is fired into a 2.0kg block, becoming embedded in the block. After becoming embedded, the bullet-block combo slide across a table and collide with a horizontal spring mounted on the end of the table. The spring, with spring constant k=30N/m, is compressed by 10cm once the bullet-block combo is brought to a stop. What was the speed of the bullet before it struck the block and became embedded? a.) 35m/s b.) 65m/s c.) 95m/s d.) 155m/s e.) 195m/s

Explanation / Answer

let,

mass of the bullet, m1=5g

mass of the block, m2=2kg

use enegry conservation,

1/2*k*x^2 = 1/2*(m1+m2)*v^2

1/2*30*(10*10^-2)^2 = 1/2*(5*10^-3+2)*v^2

final speed, v=0.387 m/sec

use momentum conservation,

m1*u=(m1+m2)*v

5*10^-3*(u) = (5*10^-3+2)*(0.387)

=====>initial speed, u=155.2 m/sec

therefore,

option (d) is correct,

initial speed, u=155 m/sec
