Physics I, from chapter: motion along a straight line. A,B,&C please
If the maximum acceleration that is tolerable for passengers in a subway train is 1.64 m/s^2 and subway stations are located 816 m apart, what is the maximum speed a subway train can attain between stations? (b) What is the travel time between stations' (c) If a subway train stops for 20.0 s at each station, what is the maximum average speed of the train, from one start-up to the next? Click if you would like to Show Work for this question:Explanation / Answer
The train must acclerate 1.64 m/s^2 for first half and then retard 1.64 m/s^2 for next half.
v ^ 2= u^2 + 2 (a) (s)
v^2= 0 + 2 ( 1.64)( 408)
v ( max speed ) = 36.58 m/s apprx
b) time travel between stations= t= 2 ( 36.58/ 1.64) = 119.982 sec apprx
c) average speed = total distance / total time= ( 816) / ( 119.982 + 20 ) = 5.829 m/s apprx
