Question

Assume that the three blocks in the figure move on a frictionless surface. In the figure m_1 = 0.98 kg, m_2 = 1.94 kg, and m_3 = 2.94 kg. The 42.1-N force acts as shown on the right block. (a) Determine the acceleration of the blocks. m/s^2 (plusminus 0.02 m/s^2) (b) Determine the tension in the cord connecting the left and right blocks. N (plusminus 0.2 N) (c) Determine the force exerted on the center block by the left block. N (plusminus 0.2 N) Source: Seaway and Fraught, College Physics, 5th edition, Problem 4.21

Explanation / Answer

a) accelaration = force/mass = 42.1/(0.98+1.94+2.94) = 7.18 m/s2

b) since there is no friction, only working force is 42.1N. this force will be equal to the tension in the rope, so the tension is 42.1 N.

c) again 42.1 N
