NEXT PRINTER VERSION The figure shows an arrangement of four charged particles, with angle e 39.0 and distance d 2.50 cm. Particle 2 has charge az 8.00 x 10 19 c; particies 3 and 4 have charges qa qa 1.60 x 10 19 C. (a) what is the distance D between the origin and partide 2 if the net electrostatic force on partide 1 due to the other partides is zero? (b) f particles 3 and 4 were moved doser to the x axis but maintained their symmetry about thvat axis, would the required value ofDbe greater than, less than, or the same as in part (a)? Explanation / Answer

The force on q1 due to q3 and q4 will be along the lines joining the q3-1 and q4-q1 . the magnitude of the force will be same

we will resolve the forces alongthe x-axis and y-axis. the y-components will be opposite in direction and will cancel up where as the x-xomponents will add up

the net force on Q1 due to Q3 and Q4

    = k*2* Q1*1.6e-19 /(2.52 +2.52tan230) magnitude only

This must be equal to the force due to Q2 on Q1 , so that th enet force on Q1 =0

   = k*Q1*8.0e-19/(2.5+D)2

k*2* Q1*1.6e-19 /(2.52 +2.52tan230)   = k*Q1*8.0e-19/(2.5+D)2
(2.5+D)2   = 4 * (2.52 +2.52tan230)

(2.5+D)Cos(30) = 5

D = 3.27 cm
