The number of submissions remaining for each question part only changes if you submit of change the answer last submission is used for your score Consider the system of blocks in the figure below, with m2 = 5 o kg and theta = 30 degree If the coefficient of static friction between block = 1 and the inclined plane is = o 22, what is the largest mass m1 for which the blocks will remain at rest? A water skier (see figure below) of mass m = 58 kg in pulled behind a boat at a constant speed of 21 mph (in the positive direction) If the tension in the horizontal rope is N (approximately) determined the magnitude and direction of the water on the magnitude

Explanation / Answer

Given :-

m2= 5 Kg

µ= 0.22

= 30°

Positive clockwise and T1 = T2

Fp2 – T = m2 a

T - m1gsin - F µ = m1 a

But the blocks will remain at rest, then:

Fp2 - T = 0

T - m1gsin - Fµ = 0

Now solve the first equation for T and replaced in the second equation:

T = Fp2

Fp2 – m1gsin – F µ =0

Finally solve the second equation for m1:

Fp2 = m1gsin + F µ

m2g = m1gsin + m1gµ

m2 = m1 sin + m1 µ

m2 = (sin + µ) m1

m1 = m2 / (sin + µ)

m1 = 5 / (sin30 + 0.22)

m1 = 6.94 Kg
