Question

Please explain and show work. I'm trying to figure out how to solve these problems given by my SI leader. Thank you.

5. A car goes around a flat curve with a radius of 65m. Ifthe car weighs 1500kg and the coefficient of friction is 0.77, what is the maximum speed the car can travels without slipping? 6. A washing machine with a radius of 65cm is spinning at 500RPM. A 60gm sweatshirt is stuck to the side while spinning. What is the normal force supplied by the walls of the washing machine? 7. A ball on a string is getting spun around above Don's head. If the ball weighs 30gm and the string makes a radius of .5m, what is the angular velocity of the ball if the Tension on the string is 45N?

Explanation / Answer

5) v = (usrg)0.5 = (0.77*65*9.8)^0.5 = 22.15 m/s

6) w = 500rpm = 500*2*pi/60 = 52.36 rad/s

tangential velocity = wr = 52.36*0.65= 34.03 m/s

Normal force = mv^2/r = 0.06*34.03^2/0.65 = 106.92 N

7) T = mv^2/r

45 = 0.03v^2/0.5

v = 54.77 m/s

w = v/r = 54.77/0.5 = 109.54 rad/s
