Question
I. Charging by rubbing You are provided with a PVC tube, a glass cylinder, a piece of wool cloth, a piece of silk cloth and an electroscope. Before we start, we need to make sure everything is neutral. To do so, connect everything (one after another, including yourself) to the ground plate. Make sure the two leaves of the electroscope are closed, rather than opening up with an angle. 1. Charge one end of the PVC tube by rubbing it with wool. What kind of charge (positive or negative) is introduced on the tube? Bring the charged end close to the electroscope (do NOT touch). What happens to the electroscope? Explain why it's happening. Move the tube away from the electroscope, what happens then? Why?Explanation / Answer
Negative charge is introduced on the PVC tube. If one is using a gold-leaf electroscope then the gold leaf will rise. This will happen because the negative charge is repelled by the PVC tube towards the gold leaf enclosed in a protective case and the rod holding the leaf. Thus, there will be repulsion between the two causing the gold leaf to rise. When the PVC tube is taken away the leaf will get back to the normal position.
