4. An automobile accelerates from rest at 2 m/s2 for 20 s. The speed is then held constant for 20 s, after which there is an acceleration of -3 m/s2 until the automobile stops. What is the total distance traveled? 5. Ball A is dropped from the top of a building at the same isntant that ball B is thrown vertically upward from the ground. When the balls collide, they are moving in opposite directions, and the speed of A is twice the speed of B. At what fraction of the height of the building does the collision occur?

Explanation / Answer

(4)

Distance travelled when automobile accelerates from rest,

d1 = ut + (1/2)at^2

d1 = 0 + (1/2)*2*20^2 = 400 m

Distance travelled when speed is held constant,

d2 = 2*20*20 = 800 m

Distance travelled when acceleration is -3 m/s^2

d3 = (2*20)^2 / 2*3

d3 = 266.66 m

Total distance traveled,

d = d1 + d2 + d3

d = 400 + 800 + 266.66

d = 1466.66 m
