Question

Part 1) Gas in a container is at a pressure of 2.4 atm and a volume of 6.4 m3 . What is the work done on the gas if it expands at constant pressure to three times its initial volume? 1.013 × 105 Pa = 1 atm. Answer in units of J. Answer= -3.113x106
Part 2) What is the work done on the gas if it is compressed at constant pressure to one-quarter of its initial volume? Answer in units of J. (I can't figure out the answer to this part)

Explanation / Answer

Part a.

Pressure of gas is 2.4 atm=(2.4)( 1.013 × 105 )=2.4312 × 105 Pa

Intial volume of gas is,Vi= 6.4m3

Final volume of gas is,Vf=(3)(6.4)m3=19.2m3

Work done is given by

W=P(Vf-Vi)= 3.113x106J

Part b.

Pressure of gas is 2.4 atm=(2.4)( 1.013 × 105 )=2.4312 × 105  Pa

Intial volume of gas is,Vi= 6.4m3

Final volume of gas is,Vf=6.4/4m3=1.6m3

Work done is given by

W=P(Vf-Vi)= -1.166976x106J
