Explanation / Answer

a)

resistor R and r are in series and their combination is given as

Rtotal = R + r = 4.8 + 1.1 = 5.9 ohm

E = Voltage of the battery = 6.3 volts

using ohm's law , current is given as

i = E/Rtotal = 6.3/5.9 = 1.07 A

direction : B to A

b)

Vab = i R = 1.07 x 4.8 = 5.14 Volts

c)

Q = rate of heat being produced in resistor R = i2 R = (1.07)2 (4.8) = 5.5 watt

d)

Q' = rate of heat being produced in battery = i E = 1.07 x 6.3 = 6.7 Watt

e)

rate of change of chemical energy = 6.7 watt
