Problem 16: The position of a moving obiect was measured at various times and the results are shown in the table and graphed in the figure Position vs Time Time (s) 0.0 9.7 19.8 30.2 40.4 49.5 61.0 69.8 Position (km) 2.80 4.77 6.9 9.29 11.8 14.2 16.7 19.2 20.00 18.00 16.00 14.00 3 1200 10.00 8.00 6.00 4.00 2.00 0.0 9.0 18.0 27.0 36.0 45.0 54.0 63.0 Time (s) ©theexpertta.com Take the slope of the curve to determine the velocity, in meters per second, at time t= 30.0 s Numeric : Anumeric value is expected and not an expression

Explanation / Answer

We know that the slope of position vs time graphs yeilds velocity of the object.

for t = 30 ; y2 = 9.29 km and y1 = 6.9

t2 = 30.2 and t1 = 19.8

slope = (y2 - y1)/(t2 - t1)

slope = (9.29 - 6.9)/(30.2 - 19.8) = 2.39/10.4 = 0.229 km/s = 0.23 km/s = 230 m/s

Hence, v = 0.23 km/s
