PART A: Calibration The apparatus was set up as required in the lab notes attached in Appendix C The curvature at known position just to the right of support C was measured with no load applied 1. 2. 3. The load P was applied in 3 increments up to a maximum of about 1.5 kg and the change in the curvature reading was recorded for each load. The moment at the location of the gauge corresponding to each load were worked out. The horizontal distance from the point of loading to the centre foot of the gauge was measured. 4. During the lab, the curvature versus moment was plotted in order to determine the experimental bending stiffness. The value was used to convert the curvature in order to obtain the bending moments in Part B of the experiment. 5 Lastly, the beam cross section was measured accurately and its theoretical bending stiffness was calculated by using given formula and the values were checked with the experimental value PART B: Loaded Beam Measurement The apparatus was set up with dimensions a, b and c each about 2-300 mm with load P2 of about 9 kg was applied and P1 was removed. The curvature at a minimum of three positions over each of segments AB, BC and CD were measured and the three contact points of the gauge were ensured that it were fully within only one of the segments. The curvature readings were converted to bending moment readings by using experimental El value obtained from the calibration (Part A). 1. 2. 3.Explanation / Answer
Part 1 is about calibration of apparatus, which shows set up of apparatus as per Appendix C. At no load condition, curvature at right of support C is measured at known position. Load P1 is applied with values of 0.5 kg, 1 kg, 1.5 kg. Moment at location of gauge and horizontal distance between gauge and point loads is measured accurately. Curvature v/s moment graph is plotted in order to find bending stiffness, also by theoretically by means of formula which is to be used in Part B. Beam cross section is measured in last.
With actually loaded beam, load P2 of 9 kg is applied in three different sections of beam for minimum three position and three contact point gauge ensuring both gauge and point load lie in each section, of about 2.3 m length of section. Curvature reading are converted by using experimental EI value from Part A.
