Question

CIEN 321 Exam 2 Fluid Mechanics (02/122016) Name Disclaimer: It is e Grade Girade t s essential to write legibly and show your work. If your work is absent or ilWlegible, and at the same tme your answer is not perfectly correct, then no partial credit can be awarded. Completely correct answers time which are Which are given without justification may receive little or no credit. Use St units for all calculations 1. Determine the pressure difference between the water pipe and the osl pipe shown.(5 stands for specific gravity)(3 points) 2. A 30-m-long vessel, with cross section shown in Figure below, carries a load of 6500 kN. How far will the water level be from the top of the vessel if its mass is 90,000 kg? (3 points) (hint: buoyant force) 3. Determine the force P needed to hold the 4-m-wide gate in the position shown in the figure. (4 points) Water Hinge

Explanation / Answer

(1)

Let the pressure in water pipe be Pw .

Pressure at point A = Pw + 15 x 1 x g = Pw + 15g

Pressure at point B = PA - 10 x 13.6 x g = Pw + 15g - 136g = Pw - 121g

Pressure at point C = PB - 0.48 x 20 x g = Pw - 130.6g

Pressure at point D = PC + 15 x 0.86 x g = Pw - 130.6g + 12.9g = Pw - 117.7g

Poil = Pw - 117.7g

Difference is pressure = 117.7g = 1153.46 Pa

(2)

Buoyance force = Volume submerged x density of water x g = V x 1000 x 9.8 = 9800V

Weight of the object = 6500 x 103 + 90,000 x 9.8 = 7382 kN

7382 x 103 = 9800 V

Volume submerged, V = 753.26 m3

Area of cross-section = 8x2 + 12 = 28 m2

Volume of vessel = 28 x 30 = 840 m3 .

Ratio of total height submerged = 753.26/840 = 0.896

Total height = 2 + 3 = 5m

Height exposed = (1 - 0.896) x 5 = 0.52 m
