Question

Please help with the following question:
Two blocks meet head-on in an elastic collision, after whichboth are joined together. Determine the final velocity(magnitude and direction), if the 10 kg block #1 was moving to theright at 10 m/s and the 2 kg block #2 was moving to the left at 8m/s.
Two blocks meet head-on in an elastic collision, after whichboth are joined together. Determine the final velocity(magnitude and direction), if the 10 kg block #1 was moving to theright at 10 m/s and the 2 kg block #2 was moving to the left at 8m/s.

Explanation / Answer

         Given                mass of first block m 1 = 10 kg                mass of second block m 2 = 2 kg              initial velocity of   first block  u1 = 10 m/s              initial velocity of second block   u 2 = - 8 m/s           since the collision be elastic               so momentun   of before collision is equal to momentum ofafter collision                            m1 u1 + m2 u2 = v( m1 + m2 )                                 v   = m1 u1 / ( m1+ m2 )   + m2u2 / ( m1 + m2 )                                      = 10 ( 10 ) / ( 10+2 )    + 2 x -8( 10 +2 )                                        = 100 / 12   -16 / 12                                        = 84 / 12                                        = 7 m/s           hense the system is moving in the direction of 10 kgblock                   So the direction   is right side.
