Question

I write 2 questions in one post.

1. you drive a car 510 ft to east, then 250 ft to north.
a) What is the distance you have coverd?
b) Use a sketch, estimate the direction of your displacement.
c) Verify your estimation in part b with numbericalcalculation.

2. A treasure map directs you to start at a palm tree and walk duenorth for10.0m. you are then to turn 90 degree and walk 15.m; thenturn 90 degree and walk 5.00m. give the distance from thepalm tree and the direction relative to north, for each fourpossible locations of the treasure.

Explanation / Answer

1) a) Total distance he traveled = 510 ft + 250 ft                                           = 760 ft b) First displacement is S1 = 510 ft along east, that meansalong positive x axis. Then S1x = 510 ft     S1y = 0 Second displacement is S2 = 250 ft north, that meansalong positive y axis. Then S2x = 0     S2y =250 ft Now the resultant displacement he traveled along x axis is             Sx = S1x + S2x                  = 510 ft + 0                  = 510 ft Total displacement he traveled along y axis is          Sy = S1y + S2y              = 0 + 250ft              = 250 ft Therefore the magnitude of the resultant displacement is             S = [Sx2 +Sy2]                = 568 ft Direction is = tan-1(Sy /Sx)                     = tan-1[(250ft) / (510ft)]                     = 26.1o
