Question
I just need further explanation whenever they use the2r/4 and the equation r2, how do we come up with those equations??? I jus need an explanation about that This is problem 10 and it is about the radious of the earththat has a value and the fact that travels around themoon for a time and we know the earth moves 1/4 around the sun. Sowe wanna know average speed and average velocity. I just need further explanation whenever they use the2r/4 and the equation r2, how do we come up with those equations??? Sowe wanna know average speed and average velocity.Explanation / Answer
Q) Why do they use 2r/4? A) The Earth's orbit around the Sun is basically a circle. After one full orbit, the Earth will have traveled the fullcircumference of the circle, or 2r. Since the Earth isonly traveling 1/4 of the way around the sun, we divide the fullcircumference by 4, resulting in 2r/4. Q) Why do they use r2? A) Since part b) asks for the magnitude of the average velocity, weneed the straight line distance that the point on the Earth hastraveled in the time interval. I can't see what the problemis asking so I'm not sure if the distance pertains to a pointrotating with the Earth or the Earth orbiting around the sun, butit won't really affect this explanation. To get the straightline distance, use the Pythagorean theorem, a2+ b2 = c2. In thisproblem, a and b are both the radius of theEarth, r, so the equation ends up as r2 +r2 = c2 and c = r2.
