Question
I just need explanation for each one. Please help this is urgent!
The structure shown in the figure below is used to support a 65-kN load. All the pin connections are in single shear. Only connections at A, B and C are pinned. Determine The minimum diameter for tie rod AB if the normal stress in the rod is limited to 100 MPa. The minimum diameters for pins A and B if the shearing stress in the pins is limited to 70 MPa. The minimum diameter for pin C if the shearing stress in the pin is limited to 85 MPa.Explanation / Answer
First off all you need to find force at each joint A,B and C by usinf free body diagram and moment balance about a suitable point.
Thereafter for part (a) you need to find the net force along axial direction in rod AB by summing up the force components at A and.Since there is a limit to normal stress in the rod apply that condition and it will give the required minimum diameter.
for min dia
axial force/net cross section area <= normal stress
For part (b), since the rod is in single shear at both pins A and B.therefore individually add fine net forces at each pins by summing up their components as has been found earlier.Since there is a limit to shear stress in the rod apply that condition at both pins and it will give the required minimum diameter.
for min dia
net force at pin (i)/net cross section area of pin <= shear stress
The same goes for part (c) as in above case.
Thank you !! :)
