Question

If you could please help me with all the anwsers and work, I'm extremely confused with a-d. Thank you!!

PROBLEM 5-8 points [2 points] (a) You put some water in a glass, and then drop in an ice cube to cool the water. The ice cube floats at the surface of the water, as usual. As the ice melts, what happens to the water level in the glass? Neglect any change in density of the liquid. The water level (the level of the surface) [ ] stays the same 1 drops rises Briefly explain: 2 points] (b) The question above relates to why, as far as sea level rise because of global warming is concerned, we're a lot more worried about ice that is currently on land, as opposed to ice that is already floating on water (such as the ice in the Arctic). The ice sheet on Greenland has a volume of approximately 3.0 million cubic km. The surface area of Earth is about 5.0 x 1014 m, and 70% of the surface is covered by oceans. Use these numbers to estimate the average amount of sea level rise that ice, after it melts, has a volume of 90% of what it had in solid form.) 2 points] (c) Assume the initial temperature of the Greenland ice is Tice -20 °C. How much energy is required to melt all the Greenland ice? Use a specific heat of 2 kJ/(kg °C) for ice and approximate the latent heat of fusion as 300 k.J/(kg) [2 points] (d) During the summer, sunlight and warm air transfers energy to the Greenland ice sheet at the rate of approximately 2 x 1014 w. (Assume this happens for three months per year.) If this energy warms and melts the surface ice, what is the sea-level rise from one summer of melting? Assume all the melted ice flows into the ocean (fortunately, that's not what happens).

Explanation / Answer

(a). Answer: Remains/ stay the same

Because, According to Archimede's principle the upward buoyant force that is exerted on a body immersed in a fluid, whether fully or partially submerged, is equal to the weight of the fluid that the body displaces and acts in the upward direction at the center of mass of the displaced fluid.

Explanation: If ice is placed in glass of water it will displaces water eqqual to the weight of the ice which is placed.

Here, you should be observe that the volume of ice cube is equal to the weight of the water is displaced by the ice cube.Hence even if the ice melts in the glass of water does not change water the level .

(b).

That to you becareful about ice on the land which will increases the level of sea due to the reason that the volume of the ice(4o c) is more than water which formed by the same amount .If the ice burges melts which are on the sea, does not increases the sea level as we seen in the case of glass of water and ice cube.
