Question

Part B Identify the reaction force to the friction force on the box. The friction force is a horizontal force applied to the box by the floor. The reaction force is the pull of the box on the rope. The friction force is a horizontal force applied to the box by the floor. The reaction force is a horizontal force in the opposite direction applied by the box to the floor. The friction force is a horizontal force applied to the box by the floor. The reaction force is a downward force applied by the box to the floor. There is no reaction here.

Explanation / Answer

Part B. Answer is (a) The frictional force is a horizontal force applied to the box by the floor. The reaction froce is the pull of the box on the rope.

Newton's third law is that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. So when we pull the box resting on a rough surface, there is a resistance force due to the friction between the box and the surface. This resistance is the reaction to the pulling force, that is the force that balances the applied force.

Part C. Answer is (D) The normal force is an upward force applied by the floor to the box. The reaction force is a downward force applied by the box to the floor.

Downward force is the weight of the box.

Part D. Answer is (B). The weight of the box is a downward force applied to the box by the earth. The reaction force is an upward force applied to the earth by the box.
