Question

An oil company is investigating the feasibility of building a facility that will require water to refine oil shale to produce jet fuel and gasoline. The company has identified oil shale deposits near an abandoned water treatment plant (285 MGD design capacity) on the Yampa River, and would like to site the oil shale facility near that river and abandoned water treatment plant. The company estimated that 242 MGD (375 ft3/s) of Yampa River water with a turbidity of 0.03 NTU or lower will be required to refine the oil shale. On the basis of the water quality information in Table 1, the company determined that coagulation-flocculation treatment of the Yampa River water is necessary. Now the oil company wants to know if the abandoned water plant can be used and/or retrofitted to suit their needs.
