Please HELP! PLEASE answer all of these PLEASE

In most tissues, cells of the tissue are intimately associated with the ECM, which (for the most part) consists of molecules produced by cells of the tissue. In the two skeletal connective tissues – bone and cartilage – the cells of the mature tissue are found in lacunae in which they are, so some degree, isolated from the ECM.

The lacunae of bone are interconnected by canaliculi, while the lacunae of cartilage are not. How does the presence of canaliculi permit communication among osteocytes in bone? Why can we not conclude that chondrocytes, isolated in lacunae, cannot communicate with one another, even though we could conclude that one sort of cell-cell communication among osteocytes cannot occur among chondrocytes?

Beyond permitting communication among osteocytes, of what importance are canaliculi in bone? In relation to this function, why are canaliculi not necessary in cartilage?

Canaliculi are established as both compact bone and spongy bone form. What, in association with bone formation and with the cells that form bone, accounts for the presence of canaliculi?

Explanation / Answer

Communication of canaliculi with the osteocytes in bone:

Bone canaliculi are microscopic canals between the lacunae of ossified bone. The radiating processes of the
osteocytes (called filopodia) project into these canals.

Importance of canaliculi in bone:

Canaliculi not necessary in cartilage:

The canaliculi are structures that are found only in the ossified bone tissues. Therefore some of the canaliculi are found in the ossified cartilages and are important but they may are not necessary in the cartilages other than the ossified tisssues.

Association with bone formation and with the cells that form bone, accounts for the presence of canaliculi:

The channels are formed by concentric layers called lamellae. The haversian canals surround blood vessels and nerve cells throughout bones and communicate with bone cells through connections called canaliculi. These cytoplasmic processes are joined together by gap junctions. Osteocytes do not entirely fill up the canaliculi.
