Understanding the case that a secretary who has been loyal to the organisation for fifteen years has met with an accident and loses the use of her right hand here are my opinions considering three options suggested:

Approach 1) The utilitarianism approach: In accordance with this approach, it will be ethical for the organisation to look at the group interest over individual interest and hence the firm should lay her off with compensation.

The approach is based on the moral values and its worth as action steps. It aims to ensure that the overall productivity & happiness of the company is considered to be a priority factor while taking decisions.

The act & the decision of the corporation is though sympathetic to the situation of the secretary but it is also observed that company budgets are not in a healthy state to deliver her salary on a monthly basis. The overall cost will ultimately get divided amongst all employees and not causing the similar increase.

To further build security amongst its employees and trust that the company supports during crisis / accidental situation it can help the secretary to plan any other alternative role which will contribute to value in terms of profits or gains.

The overall focus should be on the overall group and hence the company will have to lay her off with adequate compensation ensuring that fair treatment is given.

Approach 2: The Rights Model

This approach basically is focused on ensuring inclusivity in the organisation. It ensures that all privileges and value must be given to a disabled person similar to a normal employee. It highlights the importance of human rights for an individual and ensures that a case like where a secretary met with an accident she deserves to have equal rights in the team and right to employment as well.

In such a scenario the company should understand her situation and find a way to retain her.

Mentioned below are my views in accordance with the rights model:

The focus of rights model is making sure that an employee doesn't have to fight to get access to privileges which any other employee in the organisation will get. This decision of retaining the secretary will help her personally to deal with the situation and manage the crisis. It will also help other employees understand that a disability or such accidents should not lead to denial of participation or the right to be involved in the process.

Once the decision to retain the secretary is finalised the corporation will have to focus on two important aspects: empowerment and the accountability of the secretary. Overall it means that

The corporation will ensure that there is no denial of basic human rights, equal access to all health facilities, access to education and learning etc. The corporation will also ensure that they work towards ensuring equal opportunities for decision making and there is no exclusion from social gatherings & activities which happens during the tenure of the organisation.

Approach 3:  In my personal opinion I will ensure that the secretary is retained by the organisation as I believe every organisation has a social and moral obligation to ensure that they work towards the betterment of the society & give support to its employees in a situation like this.

It also builds the overall culture of inclusive workplace environment and helps to make employees understand the importance of accepting that everyone has equal rights.

It will be in the interest of the organisation to allocate its budget and redesign the role of secretary. The corporation will certainly benefit from the fifteen years of experience and expertise and contribute towards long-term purpose of ensuring equality in the organisation.
