Question

I need some help strting this problem An object of irregular shape has a characteristic length of L = 1m and is maintained at a uniform surface temperature of Ts = 400K. When placed in atmospheric air at a temperature of T1 = 300K and moving with a velocity of V = 100m=s, the average heat ux from the surface to the air is 20; 000W=m2. If a second object of the same shape, but with a characteristic length of L = 5m, is maintained at a surface temperature of Ts = 400K and is placed in atmospheric air at T1 = 300K, what will the value of the average convection coecient be if the air velocity is V = 20m=s? (answer: 40W=m2 K)

Explanation / Answer

H is proportional to L/V where V for both the objects is constant and for object 1 we have convection coecient to be (20000/100)*C where C is some constant. so convection coecient for object 2 is 200/5 = 40W/m^2*k
