The bullet moves horizontally from the rife barrel with a speed of 400 m/s How far does the bullet drop from a straight-line horizontal path by the time it reaches the target? Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units. Units Submit Incorrect: Try Again: 2 attempts remaining 0 Type here to search

Explanation / Answer

V0 = Initial Velocity = 400 m/sec

V0x = 400 m/sec, Since horizontally fired

V0y = 0 m/sec

ax = 0 m/sec^2

ay = -9.81 m/sec^2

Range = 230 m

Time taken by bullet to hit the target will be

R = V0x*t

where, t = time taken

t = R/V0x = 230/400 = 0.575 sec

So, Suppose bullet drops height 'h' by the time it hits the target

Using equation

-h = V0y*t + 0.5*g*t^2

-h = 0*t - 0.5*9.81*0.575^2

h = 0.5*9.81*0.575^2

h = 1.62 m

Bullet is dropped 1.62 m by the time it hits the target.
