Question
IMENT 3 Advance Study Assignn hat is the purpose of the ratchet mechanism on a micrometer caliper? 6. Explain how readings from 0.00 through 1.00 mm are obtained from the micrometer thim- ble scale when it is calibrated only from 0.00 through 0.50 mm. 7. If the density of one object is greater than that of another, what does this indicate? Do the sizes of the objects affect their densities? Explain. 8. Explain how the volume of a heavy, irregularly shaped object may be determined experimentally. Are there any limitations?Explanation / Answer
5. Purpose of ratchet mechanism - It is present to limit the turning force or we can say it tells us when the force loading is accurate. It allows slippage of the screw mechanism when a small constant force is applied on the jaw.
6. This can be done because one complete rotation of the thimble moves through 0.5 mm and during this 0.5 mm movement , the scale moves by 1mm.
7. More density means more mass per volume. Yes, size does matter as mass is proportional to volume.
8. This is quiet easy. Take a cylinder with markings on it. fill it to a specific volume and note it down. Now place the object inside the cylinder and let it get stable and now note down the new volume. The change in volume will be volume of the object.
Volume of object = final volume - initial volume.
Limitation can be the solubility because if object is soluble then the volume may increase more than it should.
