Question
Can anyone please help me with the following question.At 3:00 PM, you inoculate 1 x 103 cells in a closed flask on nutrient broth. The cells have a lag phase that lasts an hour. At 8:00 PM, the culture enters stationary phase. At that time, there are 6.5 x 107 cells in the flask. Calculate the number of generations (n), the number of generations/hour (k) and the doubling time or number of hours/generation (g).
What does n=? k=? And g=?
I don't want the answers in scientific notation.
For n I came up with the answer 15.88 which was correct but for k and g they were wrong. For k it was 3.176 and for g it was 15.11 can anyone please help me calculate g and k.
Thanks Can anyone please help me with the following question.

Explanation / Answer
Given - Time t1=3pm t2 = 8pm
Initial cells N1 = 1 x 103 Final cells N2= 6.5 x 107
n = (log N2 - log N1)/ log2
=[ log ( 6.5 x 107 ) - log (1 x 103)] / log 2
= (7.81- 3) / 0.301
= 15.82
Growth rate = number of generations/hour K = n/t or [(log N2 - log N1)] / log2 (t2-t1)
K = n / t2 - t1
= 15.82 / 8-3
= 15.82 / 5
= 3.164 / hr
Doubling time g = 1/K
= 1/3.164
= 0.31 hr
In minutes 1 hr ------- 60 min
0.31 hr ------ 60 X 0.31 = 18 min
