Explanation / Answer

The major advantage of CRISPR/Cas system is that it is highly specific. It is a site specific recombination process that exchanges the existing genomic fragment with the desired gene. The major disadvantage of other processes for obtaining mutations or overexpressing genes is that they are no specific. They get integrated into the genome at random locations. If a mutation is dominant negative, they can not complement the mutant phenotype. But, crispr method replaces the existing genomic fragment with the functional fragment.

With this technique, we can also create multiple types of mutants of the same gene which would be near impossible with traditional mutagenesis methods.

Ex. Generation of mutants in Arabidopsis and mice
