Question

Part 1: Conditions that influence standing wave formation on a string: Procedure: 1) Adjust the height of the pulley and/or vibrator so that the string running between the two is level, and ensure that the string is parallel to the meter stick on the bench. ace a 100 gram weight on the end of the string to supply tension to the string. 3) Set the frequency of the frequency generator which oscillates the string to 100.0 Hz 4) Set the optical bench on the tall platform, and move the wave generator until you 2) Pl create a standing wave containing only one half wavelength

Explanation / Answer

This experiment is performed to study the conditions that influence the standing wave formation on a string. Firstly the string is connected to a vibrator. The vibrator is used as motion generator for the string. The vibrator is connected to a function generator by means of which it is made to run.The string is to be maintained in tension by placing a 100grams weight through a pulley.Care should be taken for the string such that , the string between pulley/vibrator is parallel to the meter stick on the bench. On switching ON the appparatus , the frequency is varied and brought to 100Hz. At this frequency the string starts to oscillate. The wave generator is moved and the optical bench on the tall platform is setup such that a standing wave containing one half of the wavelength is being created.Loops will be created on the string which indicates the one half of the wavelength created.Further the position of the generator is varied to maximize the amplitude of the standing wave present. There will be increase in number of loops created.A node indicator is to be placed under the node created, nearer to to the vibrator where string is attached. The position of the node is measured with respect to the pulley and vibrator using the meter stick scale which is built into the bench. These positions of the nodes created are to be noted down. The number of half wavelengths present in the wave are noted down. The experiment is further carried on by moving the wave generator back until a standing wave with one more half wavelength is being formed. The experiment is further performed by varing amplitude to create larger standing wave such that there will be no more room availability for new standing waves to be formed.
