Can someone please help me with questions?

36. S ome species of stick insects have wings, others are wingless. Recent research indicates that wings have been gained and lost several times during the evolutionary history of stick insects. (a) For the species on the phylogeny shown below, which hypothesis requires fewer number of wing gains and wing losses? Common ancestor -The common ancestor had wings. --O The common ancestor lacked wings. (b) Explain your answer Mark the transitions where wings were gained or lost on the diagram.

Explanation / Answer

a) common ancestor lacked wings

b) because it gives rise to wingless descendants too. Since the farthest descendant has retained wings indicates that they are useful to the organism and hence it is less likely that the common ancestor possessed it but it's nearest descents lost it/ got rid of it.

c) wings were 1st gained in the 1st bifurcation itself where the common ancestor evolves into a winged and a wingless species .
