Question

Can someone please help me define these phrases? I just joined my schools BAJA team and I have no Idea what any of these things are.

Roll rate (chassis to wheel center): Sprung mass natural frequency: Type of jounce damping: Type of the rebound damping: Roll camber (deg/deg): Static toe: Toe change (over the travel): Static camber and adjustment method: Camber change (over the travel);: Static caster angle: Caster change (over the travel): Kinematic trail: Static kingpin inclination angle: Static kingpin offset: Static scrub radius: Static percent Ackermann: Percent anti dive/ anti squat: Static roll center position:

Explanation / Answer

1. Roll rate -When the sprung mass of a vehicle rolls about its axis, it is called as roll rate and roll rate is measured in torque/degree of roll.

2. SPRUNG MASS -Consider a vehicle which is driving at a speed and it encounters a small bump . Viewing the vehicle from outside . You see that when the vehicle crossed the bump the driver didnot feel the disturbance but the wheel moved up and down. That means there is a system connecting the wheel and the driver compartment which does this function of isolation - the suspension system. The portion of the vehicle which actually gets isolated, or suspended or sprung includes the body, engine , transmission, the fuel tank , exhaust , trims , chassis frames and also a part of the suspension . So this mass is called the sprung mass. The frequency of sprung mass is called sprung mass natural frequency.

3.JOUNCE DAMPING is the damping takes place when the wheel go up

4. REBOUND DAMPING is the damping takes place when the wheel moves down.
