Question

In the figure below n1 = 1.70 , n2 = 1.50 and n3 = 1.30 . Light reflects from material 1 into material 2. If light is incident at point A at the critical angle for the interface between materials 2 and 3, what are the angle of refraction at point B, the initial angle theta. If , instead, light is incident at point B at the critical angle for the interface between materials 2 and 3, what are the angle of refraction at point A, the initial angle theta . If, instead, light is incident at point A at Brewster's angle for the interface between materials 2 and 3, what are the angle of refraction at point B, the initial angle theta .

Explanation / Answer

a) critical angle = arcsin(1.3/1.5)= 60 degrees

so angle of refraction is 60 degrees

b) 1.7 sin(theta) = 1.5 sin(60)

theta= arcsin( 1.5 sin(60)/1.7)=49.83 degrees

c) so angle with normal at B is 60

so angle from normal at A is 30

so refrated angle is 30

d) so incident angle is 1.7 sin(theta) = 1.5 sin(30)

theta = 26.18 degrees

e) brewster angle = arctan( 1.3/1.5)=40.91

so refrated angle = 40.91

f) now 1.7 sin(theta) = 1.5*sin(40.91)
theta=35.3 degrees
