Please give an explantion. I know the correct answer already I just dont know the formulas to get there.

The following information applies to the next two questions. A proton is fixed on each corner of an equilateral triangle having a side of 1.50 nm What is the electric potential energy of this charge distribution? If the protons are released from rest, they will fly apart due to their mutual repulsion. Assuming the only forces acting on the protons are the electric forces they exert on each other, what is the speed of each proton when they are very far apart?

Explanation / Answer

15) Electric Potential energy is the amount of work done to bring a charge from infinite distance

to a configuration. Here , 3 protons are fixed at the vertices of an equilateral triangle.

The work done to bring the first proton will be 0 . The work done by second proton will be non zero

as work is done to overcome repellent forces due to first proton. Similar is the case for third

proton.

Work done by first proton : W1 = 0

Work done by second proton : (k*q*q)/r k is 9 x 10^9 r= 1.5 x 10^-9 q is charge on proton = 1.6 x 10^-19 C

W2 = 1.536 x 10^-19 J

Work done by third proton : 2 * W2 as it has to overcome 2 repellent forces.

Net Electric potential energy = 4.6 x 10^-19 J

16)When protons are released and very far apart ,all the Electric potential energy will be

converted to kinetic energy and it will be equally distrebuted among three.

(4.6 x 10^-19)/3 = (1/2)MpV^2 Mp is mass of proton = 1.67 x 10^-27 Kg V is velocity

V = 1.36 x 10^4 m/s
