Question
I have uploaded images of the question and answer and just need a few things clared.
What does J stand for and why is it PI/32? What is the meaning of Tc and how is it calculated?
A hollow shaft with an outside diameter of 400 mm and an inside diameter of 300 mm is subjected to both a torque of 350 kN m and an axial tensile load of 1500 kN. as shown in Fig. P6-92. Determine the principal stresses and the maxi mum shearing stress at a point on the outside surface of the shaft. Figure P6.92 A = pi / 4 (400 2 - 300 2) = 54.98(103 ) mm2 = 54.98(10-3) m2 J = pi / 32(400 4 - 300 4) = 1718.1(10 6) mm 4 = 1718.1(10-6) m4 sigma x = p / A 1500(103) / 54.978(10-2) = 27.28(106) N/m2 = 27.28 MPa TExplanation / Answer
J is polar moment of inertia
J=Ixx+Iyy, where Ixx and Iyy are moment of inertia about x and y axis respectively.
for hollow cylindrical shaft moment of inertia, Ixx=Iyy=(pi/64)*((Outer diameter)^2 - (Inner diameter)^2)
T = torque (kN.m) and c= outer radius of shaft.
From torque equation shear stress is calculated.
