Question

Particle 1 carrying 2.0 ?C of charge is fixed at the origin of a rectangular coordinate system xy, particle 2 carrying -1.0?C is fixed 45? above the positive horizontal axis x 2.0mm from the origin, and particle 3 carrying -1.0?C is fixed 45? below the positive horizontal axis 2.0mm from the origin.

Part A

Where in the system should you place a particle 4 carrying -2.0?C so that the vector sum of the electric forces exerted on particle 1 is zero?

Express your answers separated by a comma.

x4*y4 = mm

Explanation / Answer

the force on charge 1 due to charge 2 and 3 is attractive

so the net force due to both the charges will be in the positive x direction

so fourth cahrge should be placed in the negative x direction on the x axis and the charge has to be negative ,for the force to be zero
