Question

Please help! I am very confused about lenses

iPad 2 of 3 11:44 PM 3. Real world optical systems, such as telescopes, use a combination of multiple lenses within their system. In the case of a two-lens system as shown on the next page, the image of the object generated by the first lens (L1) becomes the object for the second lens (L2). a) The lenses are identical with a power of 6.67 D. What is the focal length? b) Where will the first image be located relative to L? c) What is the magnification of this image? d) Where will the second image be located relative to L? e) What is the magnification of the second image due to L2? What is the total magnification of this optical system? 47% CD

Explanation / Answer

a) f = 1/power = 1/6.67 = 0.15 = 15 cm

b) 1/p + 1/q = 1/f

1/40 + 1/q = 1/15

q= 24 cm

so 24 cm to the right of L1

c) M = - q/p = -24/40 = -12/20 = -6/10 = -0.6

d) so the first image acts as the object

so it 24 cm to the right of L1

so 6 cm to the left of L2

so p =6

1/6 + 1/q = 1/15

q =-10 cm

so 10 cm to the left of L2

e) M = -q/p = 10/6

f) Mtotal = -0.6*10/6 = -1
