Question

Question #9 ( 10 points) Greasy Oil Company has hired Dr. Bonzo Bonzo, a bioengineer, to find a way to offset the increase in atmospheric carbon n. She proposes to increase primary production in the surface ocean through the xide from fossil fuel combustio dio addition of a trace metal to stimulate the biological pump, What trace metal should she add? As Dr. Bonzo's ass where do you think the best location for this enhanced biological pump should be (what ocean or sea or bay -be specific like "southern Mediterranean Sea")? She's a demanding boss, so you have to explain why this ocean is the best. Which primary producer species would you hope to stimulate during this project, cyanobacteria or and why? Would the addition of herbivorous zooplankton increase the removal of CO2 or decrease it-think about t biological pump? Please provide the details which support your answers. diatoms,

Explanation / Answer

calcium can be used to stimulate the biological pump in oceans to start carbon recycling. southern ocean is a major carbon sink and recycler on earth it is also responsible for climate related changes on earth. thus this ocean will be best for the given situation. Diatoms are better than cyanobacteria for the reasons such as preferably eaten by zooplanktons, non motile and thus do not cover surface of water, heavier and thus settle in bottom, largely recycle carbon and do not cause blooms like cyanobacteria. herbivores zooplanktons help in removing the carbonates from water and replenishing it during cycling. it is important to balance their ratio with that of planktons to maintain a healthy carbon cycling in sea.
