Explanation / Answer

1. During protein synthesis at least four energy units (ATP and GTP) are required for each peptide bond formation.

First ATP is spent during activation of amino acid. In this process amino acid is coupled to its specific tRNA leads to the formation of aminoacyl-tRNAs and it requires hydrolysis of ATP.

Second GTP is used in initial binding of amino acid at the initiator site on mRNA-30S unit. GTP hydrolysis by initiation factor-2 (IF-2) releases all initiation factors from the complex.

Third GTP is hydrolyzed during elongation step; GTP is bound to elongation factor EF-TU. Incoming aminoacyl-tRNA binds to GTP-EF-TU and after position at correct position on (A site) initiation complex GTP gets hydrolyzed and EF-TU-GDP release from the unit.

Fourth GTP is used by elongation factor EF-G (translocase) which uses for translocating ribosome by one codon ahead.

Hence in all above four energy units energy is spent to create covalent bond between monomer and its carrier tRNA. Hence correct option is bond between monomer and carrier.

2. The hydropathy index (indicator of hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity) of glutamic acid side chain is -3.5 while for valine is +4.2. Minus sign indicates hydrophilic whereas positive sign indicates hydrophobic. Hence based on this, valine is more hydrophobic.
