Primary structure – It is the sequence of amino acid and normal blood cells has hemoglobin which binds oxygen. However, during sickle cell anemia, the primary sequence is altered which interferes with the ability of the cell to travel through the smallest blood vessels. Just one change in one amino acid in the polypeptide chain in hemoglobin is responsible. Hence the primary structure is impacted.
