Question

I'm solving a question for class and I'm really struggling with it.
It's a question that involves calculating the test statisticvalue. I understand how to do that, but what I'm stuck on ishow to figure out the true mean (x bar) and the true standarddeviation.
The problem is two-tailed, I think, so I'm working with theequation:
z = x bar - sub 0 / standard deviation sub xbar
and I don't know how to calculate x bar or the true standarddeviation. My mean is 8.88 cm and I'm working with a data setin R. What would I do (generally) to figure out x bar andstandard deviation?
Most of what I read has me entering a whole bunch of numbersin like
x bar = Number + Number + ........ + Number / n =answer.
I don't know where they get all those numbers or what the....... means.
Thanks. I hope this question made sense.

Explanation / Answer

Hi Zoe, The .... means there are a bunch of other numbers in betweenthe one to the left of the .... and to the right of the ....There were just too many for them to write them all down. It sounds like your x-bar is 8.88 (x-bar is also called theSAMPLE MEAN) So you already have that. You should have also been given thesample standard deviation ( given the symbol"s") If not you may have to compute it from the list of numbers. Let me know if that helped or message me if you need more help. Pilly
