Question
I'm seeing a lot of issues in the news that focus on attribution, perception, judgment, and decision making. These strategies, however, often trade efficiency for the sake of accuracy. That's why their described with terms like fallacies, heuristics, bias, or traps, in the case of Hammond and colleagues. Choose a decision you were, are, or anticipate being involved in--whether alone or with others. Describe that situation and explain how at least one cognitive strategy was operating, likely to the detriment of quality.
Explanation / Answer
Everyday the news channels bombards us with several issues and force to think as it is presented by them. In most cases we often go with their opinions and judge the issues accordingly as it is most convenient for us. One such issue that brought me to evaluate my own thought process is a rape case that is hotly debated over channels, there was a sympathy for the victim and I too support the victim blindly and wanted the convict to get maximum punishment. But the angle that made me think about this is, the victim has been raped over 13 times by the same person, she is in her late 40s, has a good career, and has enough experience to judge the unwanted sexual motives of other. These rapes have happened to her by the same person and over a period of 2 years. I don't support rape in any manner, but why did the victim allowed her to be raped 13 times, why didn't she sought help earlier and reported the case. In this case the convict is emphasizing that sex has happened with consent and that victim was trying blackmail him and when she failed in her attempt she reported it to the police to take revenge on him. I had already judged the convict to be guilty from the first information that I recieved and conformed my judgement by the support that this victim got through the social media. But, now I am in a thought process whether I should have aa judgin opinion against anyone either the victim or the convict based on the first information and confirming-evidence because there could be a lot more behind what is being projected and presented. So now I maintain an unbiased attitude towards the victim and the convict.
