Question
I'm seeing a lot of issues in the news that focus on attribution, perception, judgment, and decision making. We will focus on strategies. These strategies, however, often trade efficiency for the sake of accuracy. That's why their described with terms like fallacies, heuristics, bias, or traps, in the case of Hammond and colleagues.
For this week's Blog, please choose a decision you were, are, or anticipate being involved in--whether alone or with others. Describe that situation and explain how at least one cognitive strategy was operating, likely to the detriment of quality.
Explanation / Answer
Answer: One such situation that I faced was of bias in the decision making. I wanted to take consultation on a legal affair. I was searching for a competent lawyer who could advise me on the issue. One of my friends introduced me to a female lawyer for the consultation. She guided me with some instructions but I had a bias that females were less competent as compared to males so I didn’t follow her advice and consulted another lawyer who was male. I followed the advice of the male lawyer and the outcomes were negative. I realized that what female lawyer told me was the perfect thing that could be done in my situation but because of my gender bias I did not followed her advice and followed an advice that was totally wrong.
