Question
A poll of 4,265 adults in the U.S. between Oct. 25 - Nov. 4 of 2106 (prior to the presidential election) was conducted by the Pew Research Center. The results detail responses to the question, Thinking about U.S. anti-terrorism efforts, which comes closer to your view? The two response options were (a) No circumstances in which torture is acceptable, and (b) Some circumstances in which torture is acceptable.
The graph below shows the responses for different demographic groups. Torture Views Although not reported in the graph, the margin of error for the data is 3.1%. Based on these poll results, can you conclude that a greater percentage of men than women agree that there are some circumstances in which torture is acceptable? Why or why not? You MUST numerically (i.e, use some math) to support your answer. If you need help with this, please see the Section 7-2 lecture video in D2L under Content.
Explanation / Answer
1)
Overall, 48% say there are some circumstances under which the use of torture is acceptable in U.S. anti-terrorism efforts; about as many (49%) say there are no circumstances under which the use of torture is acceptable.
Men (53%) are somewhat more likely to say there are than that there are not (44%) circumstances under which it is acceptable for the U.S. to use torture. The balance of opinion among women is the reverse: 53% say there are no circumstances where it is acceptable for the U.S. to use torture, while 44% say there are some.
Across age groups, 58% of adults younger than 30 do not think there are circumstances where it’s acceptable for the government to use torture. Those ages 30-49 and 50-64 are roughly divided in their views, and most of those 65 and older (54%) say there are some circumstances where the use of torture is acceptable.
The results are mixed when we take margin of error into account. So, we cant for sure say that a greater percentage of men than women agree that there are some circumstances in which torture is acceptable
