Estimating the Amount and Rate of Motion in a Ce Transform Fault (continued) of Motion in a Continental EXERCISE 2.10 Section: Date: It (red line in the figure below) for several hundred a 30-Ma vertical layer of marble have been offset by Name: Course: Field geologists have mapped an active continental transform fault (red lin kilometers. A 50-million-year-old (50-Ma) body of granite and a 30-Mave the fault as shown. (a) Draw arrows to indicate the direction in which the plate on the northeas plate on the southwest side. (b) Measure the amount of offset of the 50-Ma granite body. northeast side of the fault has moved relative to the km mediately after the granite formed and continues past 50 million years, calculate the rate of offset (C) The geologists have proved that faulting began almost immediately after the s. today. If the fault blocks moved at a constant rate for the past 50 million yea km/million years; mm/year (d) Was the rate constant for 50 million years? Measure the offset of the 30-Ma marble. km Geologic markers displaced by a continental transform fault. Kilometers 0.100 200 300 400 500 50. Ma 30 Mas 50 Ma

Explanation / Answer

A. I am not able to mark but the motion is clockwise i.e dextral movement and so the NE block has moved towards left and SW towards right if you stand at the middle of the line.

b. The distance between the granite body is 11.6cm so approximately 1000km according to scale of the map.

c. so 1000/50 = 20km/million year and mm/year = 20*106mm/yr

d. yes the rate was constant for last 50million year. The offset between 30 million year marble is 200km approximately.

the mesurement are difficult to take by the scale from screen. but the value are approximately correct just recheck again with the values.
